John Frederick HOEY, named for his grandfather John Hoey, was the only one of the eleven Hoey children to marry and have a child in Ireland.
On May 30, 1845 he and Ellen Kane NEAL*** married in Brannockstown Cross. In 1846, at the age of 24, John sailed for America on the "Albania" with his parents and siblings; his wife and Ann followed on the ship "Java" and arrived in Boston April 18, 1846. By 1849 John and Ellen were living in Framingham, MA where John Jr. (1849) and William (1850) were born.
By 1851 John had relocated to Thompson, CT, a shoe town south of Webster, where brothers William and James also settled. Here Richard (1851), Michael (1853), and Ellen Maria (1855) were born. The family fell on hard times in Thompson. In 1857 they returned briefly to Webster, and on November 10, 1857 were received at the State Alms House in Monson. Tragically, the following month four-year-old Michael and two-year-old Ellen Maria died of scarlet fever there. The family soon got back on its feet. James was born in 1858 and Mary Ellen in 1861.
John F. Hoey, Sr. and all his brothers served in the Civil War. On January 29, 1862 he enlisted in Company E, 13th Connecticut Infantry Regiment; on October 19, 1864 he was captured at Cedar Creek, Virginia, and was imprisoned. He died of pneumonia as a paroled prisoner of war on February 27, 1865 and was buried at Annapolis National Cemetery in Maryland.
Many of his descendants now living in Natick, MA.
