Son of Hans Olsen Skare, who was also known as Henry Olsen, and Tone Daalaan (married 2nd Joseph Olsen Omness), both of whom were born in Norway and emigrated. John worked most of his life as a farmer and carpenter. Many summers he worked for his uncle, Capt. Ole Oleson, moving logs to mill on Lake Winnebago. May 26, 1886, he married Thurine, a daughter of Mathis Olsen Haevre and Thorild. They had eight children: Harry, Clara, Stella, Emil, Erna, Henrietta, Ida and Thelma. His life is recounted in his wife's memoirs, published under the title _Wisconsin my Home_, which daughter Erna coauthored.
Cemetery records give March 4, 1862 as the date of his burial; his wife's book records that date as the day of his death.
