A son of Halvor Oleson and Margarette (Margit)Kittilsdatter of Telemark, Norway, Hans was known both as Hans Olsen Skare and as Henry Olsen. He married Tone Daalaan, and they had three children, Mary, John, and Julia before he went off to war. He died suspecting he had been poisoned, just three weeks after returning home from Alabama and the Civil War. His widow later married Joseph Omness. (His son's wife wrote her memoirs under the title _Wisconsin my Home_, in which she explains Henry's names and how he came to be called Olsen.)
