Dr. Richard Potts Johnson enlisted with the 1st Maryland Infantry, Company "C", Confederate States of America, as a Private 17th May 1861.
- Appointed as Surgeon, 13th Sept. 1861.
- On Roster of Field Officers and Staff of the 3rd Reg't, General Ewell's Division, 27th March 1862.
- Wounded at Petersburg, 25th June 1864.
- In General Hospital #3 at Lynchburg, Virginia, 26th July 1864.
- Surgeon in charge of General Hospital #3 at Lynchburg, Virginia, 11th Jan. 1865.
- Paroled at General Hospital #3 at Lynchburg, Virginia, 16th April, 1865.
Although Dr. Richard Potts Johnson was Appointed Surgeon, his Officer Rank on Muster Cards is not noted. I cannot verify a rank as Colonel nor Brigadier General, but was somewhere above Lt. or Captain. Other archival documents may prove his Rank.
