Terry joined the Shelby County Sheriff's Department in 1977. He had an outstanding career moving up through the ranks, to Assistant Chief Inspector, with several hundred under his leadership. He was considered an amazing mentor, confidant, boss, and overall ""man's man"". He loved and took pride in his commitment to the county and all law enforcement personnel. He was loved by all and respected by many.
Terry Achels was married to Joann Achels on October 19, 1991. He was a loving and committed husband, provider and best friend.
He is survived by daughters, Kamisha Achels and Terrie Achels of the Shelby County Sheriff's office, from a previous marriage and daughter, Tamisika Smith and son, Maurice Shipp (joined from current marriage). He is survived by three sisters, Shelia K. Cunningham of Maryland, Gwendolyn Fleming and Brenda Cofield of Atlanta, GA; eight grandchildren, Bertram Jordon, Jr., Jayson Jordon, Kameron Jordon, Toriana Smith, Christopher Smith, Cayden Smith, Asia Wilson, Maxwell Shipp; one son-in-law, Dr. Carlos Smith; one daughter-in-law, Shelley Shipp, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
