Sergeant Derris Brown was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army, SGT Brown served our country until September 27th, 1968 in Quang Duc, South Vietnam. He was 28 years old and was not married. It was reported that Derris died from small arms fire or grenade. His body was recovered. Derris was born on January 14th, 1940 in Bladenboro, North Carolina. SGT Brown is on panel 42W, line 026 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for 6 years.
US Army, Vietnam: The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB) mark of distinction for the fighting soldier, was awarded to Corporal Derris Brown in Vietnam June 1. Cpl Brown, son of Furnie G Brown, Route 3, Bladenboro, NC is assigned to Company A, 2nd Battalion of the 4th Infantry Division's 35th Infantry as a team leader. CIB's have been awarded since late in World War II for sustained contact against an enemy in ground action. The Badge is a blue rectangle with a silver rifle mounted on it and a curved wreath at the top. Subsequent awards are represented by stars in the center of the wreath. The 28 year old soldier entered the Army in November 1961 and was last stationed at Fort Gordon, Georgia before arriving in Vietnam in March of this year. He is a 1959 graduate of Spaulding Monroe High School, Bladenboro.
He served with Alpha Company, 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, "Cacti Forever", 4th Infantry Division, USARV.
He was awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Bronze Star, The Purple Heart for his combat wounds, The National Defense Service Medal, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Vietnam Campaign Medal and The Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Unit Citation.
