Obituary: Mabel Bardwell Moses, 92, of Charleston, departed this life on June 7, 2013, after a brief illness.
Mabel retired with 42 years of service from the West Virginia State Tax Department as executive director of the budget and payroll department. In addition, she was passionate about politics throughout her life, serving as a member and Treasurer in the WV Democratic Party, as well as a delegate to several national conventions. She was a quiet and influential force behind the scenes of WV politics for many years.

Mabel was a lifelong member of St. George Orthodox Cathedral. She was a member of the St. George Ladies Guild, Senior Fellowship and served on many committees throughout her life. In addition, she was a member of the Shums IL Bir, a Ladies charitable organization which has supported numerous community and church projects; and served as a volunteer for CAMC for several years.

Mabel devoted her life to her late husband, George, for over 42 years and her family. She was known for her quiet, yet demanding demeanor, strength and decisive "common sense" approach to life. Mabel set high expectations for her family by encouraging educational achievement, a strong work ethic, integrity, and love and devotion to family, church and community. Although she had no children of her own, her legacy will live on through the generations of children that she cared for and raised, Victoria B. Skaff, Joe Bardwell, Felice B. Joseph, Lindsay and Adam Skaff, Ike and Brittany Joseph and Cole, Chad and Cristopher Bardwell.

Mabel is survived by sister-in-law, Lorice Moses; and many nieces and nephews of the Nicholas and Anna Bardwell and George and Miriam Skaff Moses families. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Moses; her parents, Nicholas and Anna Bardwell; brothers Effie, Victor, Philip and FrederickBardwell; sisters, Mary, Elizabeth, and Victoria Bardwell; sister-in-law, Evelyn Howard Bardwell; and god children, Alberta Salem and Daniel Namay.

The family would especially like to thank Dr. Nicholas Cassis, Very Rev. Father Olof Scott; Doctors Namay, Chaney, Goldfarb, and Espiritu; caregivers; and the Hospice staff (at Hubbard House and at home) who provided such good care and compassion.

Service will be held 11 a. m. on Wednesday, June 12, at St. George Orthodox Cathedral with the Very Reverend Father Olof Scott and Father Stephen DeYoung officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday, June 11, at Bartlett-Burdette-Cox Funeral Home, where Trisagion Prayer services will be held at 7:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to St. George Orthodox Cathedral Foundation and Hubbard Hospice House, 1606 Kanawha Blvd., W.; Charleston, WV 25312.
