Brevet Brigadier General in the American Civil War. A carpenter and Iowa State Auditor before the Civil War, he became a captain in the 14th Iowa Infantry when the war began. He was a major of the 41st Iowa Infantry and became a lieutenant colonel in the 7th Iowa Cavalry from 1863 until 1866. During the war, the 7th Iowa Volunteer Cavalry was assigned the responsibility of securing the frontier from a perceived threat from the Plains Indians. Pattee was made brevet brigadier general for faithful and meritorious service during the war on March 13, 1865. After the war he was an Indian Agent and businessman until his death in Hot Springs, South Dakota, in 1901.
