Lowell Donald Hoffman was born in Fairmont, MN the fourth child of Gus and Emma Hoffman. When he was six months old he moved with his family to a farm in Grantsburg, WI. Lowell attended Branstad Grade School and Grantsburg High School. After graduating in 1936 he took over most of the farm work. He must have enjoyed farming as he really liked to sing while he worked. He loved the big band era. The Hoffmans did a lot of custom work for other farms including threshing and silo filling.
Lowell was married on January 5, 1952 to Eunice Whiteaker Roberts in the tiny Catholic Church in Grantsburg. Lowell and Eunice purchased one of the Gus Hoffman farms where they raised their five children and where they lived the rest of their lives. After farming for a while Lowell took a job at a furniture manufacturer in Grantsburg where he worked until retiring.
He was active in the local community. Lowell was the clerk of the town of Grantsburg for 35 years, Treasurer of the Grantsburg Historical Society for several years, a Friend of the Public Library, a committed member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and a Knight of the Knights of Columbus. He had a special interest in restoring and maintaining a nearly forgotten Indian cemetery in Trade Lake during his retirement.
Lowell and Eunice's children are Thomas (Karen), Cathy Olmsheid (Don), Mary Ann, Patrick (Cindy), and Virginia Benusa (Mike). Lowell also had siblings Joseph C and James V Hoffman.
