Caroline and August married in 1881. On September 21, 1884, they sailed for New York City from Hamburg, Germany, on the Gellert. Their daughter, Augusta, was 2; their son, William, was 6 months old.

On the 1900 and 1910 federal census, August and Caroline were living in Mill Creek Township, Morgan County, Missouri. After Caroline's death, August was on both the 1920 and 1930 census in Dresden, Pettis County, Missouri.
