Susan was born at Illogan, St. Agnes, Cornwall, England. Her birth year is shown as 1816 in Cornwall census records (rather than 1813 calculated on her gravestone here).
She married Alexander Chegwin, also of Illogan, in about 1835. They raised at least 11 children. Her husband was a miner as were several of their sons. Her husband died at Truro in 1868.
After 1871 Susan and seven of her sons and daughters immigrated to Christchurch; two children immigrated to the United States, and only two stayed in Cornwall. She was 86 years old at her time of death.
