She immigrated to America with her parents, Jan Van Stoutenburg and Elizabeth Klomp, arriving in New York in 1847. The father and his son Cornelius are reported in family tradition to have been washed overboard and thus died at sea. Elizabeth Klomp remarried in 1852 with Cornelis Lakemen. She died April 1860 as found in church records and listed on the mortality schedule 1860 for Mahaska county, Iowa.
