Born Maartje/Martha "Mattie" Lakeman to Cornelis Lakeman and Elisabeth (Klomp Van Stoutenburg) Lakeman in Pella, Iowa.

She was married 4 times:
Husband #1: Dirk Van Rossum. They had one son; Cornelus Henry Van Rossum (1879-1951), who went by the name of "Charles Ross". Charles lived with his mother in Winslow, Arizona until her death in 1925. In the 1930 & 1940 Census Reports, he is married to a woman named "Dean Ann" who was born in Norway. He worked for the railroad.

Interestingly, before his mother's death, Cornelis/Charles' paperwork lists him as being born in Iowa. After her death, his place of birth changes to Missouri and his father's name is incorrect on his death certificiate. He did spend his growing up years in Kansas City. Perhaps he did not really know or the people filling out the paperwork did not know the facts.

Husband #2: Phillip Kirsher. Married in Kansas City in 1885. Died in 1921 at age 65. According to death certificate, he is buried at Forest Hill Cemetery in KC. No next of kin listed.

Husband #3: Charles Fletcher. Married in Kansas City in 1892. Nothing more known.

Husband #4: Henry F. Peters. Married in Kansas City in 1908 and died of typhoid in 1909. Though he appeared to be living in Arizona, he died at a hospital in Los Angeles and then his body was transported to his hometown in Illinois for burial.

Martha/"Mattie" owned Rooming Houses in Winslow and made a living as a landlady to lodgers/roomers. In her WILL, her Chevrolet Sedan was left to her dog, Teddy Peters. Rental income and properties were left to her only son, C.H. Ross and some of her tenants. Household goods, furniture and bedding were to be left in the houses as they stand.
