Charles Funkenstein Gall, Jr. used the name given him by his step-father "William Collier, Jr" as his "professional name"; although his legal documents still showed his given birth name of "Charles F Gall, Jr." until at least Sept 1934. When he was married in December 1934, using the name "William Collier, Jr.", apparently his legal name had been changed between Sept 1934 and Dec 1934.

He was a movie star, stage actor, and film producer. Beginning at the age of 7 on stage and in movies at age 14. His career was enhanced following tours he made beginning at the age of 18 to Europe. He appeared in at least 89 movies during his career. Successfully he made the transition from silent films to "talking" movies. His last movie role was in 1935. He returned for two years to England. In 1937, upon his return to the United States, he began his film production career. He transitioned again in entertainment in the 1960s by producing dramas for television.

For his contributions in entertainment he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
