Professional Hockey Player. Also known as 'Dave' and 'Lil Sweeney.' A native of Saratov, Russia, 'Sweeney' Schriner was the first Russian to play professional hockey in the NHL. Schriner played for teams in the NHL, AAHA, CCJHL, M-Cup, ASHL, Al-Cup, IHL, WCSHL, and the PCHl hockey leagues, including the Calgary North Hill from 1926 to 1928, Calgary Canadiens from 1928 to 1931, Calgary Brooks from 1931 to 1933, Syracuse Stars from 1933 to 1934, New York Americans from 1934 to 1938, Toronto Maple Leafs from 1939 to 1943, Calgary Combines from 1943 to 1944, Lethbridge Maple Leafs from 1946 to 1948, and the Regina Capitals from 1948 to 1949. Schriner retired from playing hockey after the 1948 to 1949 hockey season. Schriner was the recipient of the Calder Memorial Trophy for 1934 to 1935, recipient of the Art Ross Tropphy in 1936, and 1937, was the First All-Star Team Left wing in 1936, and 1941, and Second All-Star Team Left Wing in 1937. After retiring Schriner worked for Canadian Fina in the oil and gas industry. In 1962 Schriner was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as a Player. Schriner also played hockey in his later years with the Calgary Oldtimers Hockey Association. Schriner died in Calgary, Alberta, on July 4, 1990, at the age of 68.
