Alan studied law in Whitehall, New York, and in the office of Congressman D J Foster. Alan was admitted to the New York State Bar.

Alan later worked as a clerk for Dr. W Seward Webb, and served as a traveling representative for the company of Ferguson & Adsit. Shortly before his death, he began working as the Vermont representative for the FW Stocks & Sons Milling Company of Boston.

Alan was a member of and senior counselor for the Burlington (Vermont) Council of the United Commercial Travelers, and a member of the Burlington chapter of the F & A M.

An obituary was published in the Burlington Weekly Free Press (Burlington, Vermont) on May 9, 1912.
