FORT LAUDERDALE - Hubert R. Collins, 86, passed peacefully away, Tuesday July 10, 2013, as a result of natural causes.

Mr. Collins was born in Lyons, GA, on April 14, 1927 and resided in Plantation, Florida for the past 50 years. He was an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Navy, where he served aboard the USS Intrepid during World War II. After his military service Mr. Collins headed south and moved to Lakeland, Florida. In 1946 he met his wife, Marilyn, and they were married in 1947. They celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary in June of this year.

In 1949 Mr. Collins began his life long career with Publix Supermarkets. He started as an assistant store manager in Bartow, FL and went on to open new stores in Lakeland, Sarasota, along with many others on the east coast of Florida. He opened the first store in Miami in 1959. Mr. Collins retired in 1994 as vice president of the Miami division after 45 years of service. He was very grateful for his relationship with the Jenkins family and all the others who were the first generation of the Publix Supermarket family, as well as all the other people he met along the way as a result of his employment.

Mr. Collins enjoyed many things in life, but his favorite hobbies were fishing in fresh or salt water, private flying, traveling around the world and playing with his beloved dog, Mindy. He was the most proud of three things in his life: his family, his service in the U.S. Navy, and his service with Publix Supermarkets.

Mr. Collins was preceded in death by his son, Gary and his daughter, Susan. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; son, Ray Collins and his companion, Maggie Auletta; son-in-law, Bob Sandidge; granddaughter, Jennifer Walsh and her husband, Shawn; great-grandchildren, Cayden and Maycee Walsh; sister, Suzy Ramon; and his dog, Mindy.

Mr. Collins' family will receive friends Saturday, July 13, 2013, from 1-2 pm at Lakeland Funeral Home, 2125 South Bartow Highway in Lakeland. A celebration of his life will follow at 2 pm. Interment will take place at Lakeland Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, Mr. Collins' family has requested that donations be made in his memory to Wounded Warrior Project P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675. Condolences may be made to Mr. Collins' family at www.lakelandfuneralhome.com
