In 1860, he was a lawyer living with his family in Union[town], Fayette County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 9" tall and had light hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service with four regiments:
1. Enlisted at the stated age of thirty-nine in Uniontown April 22, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Camp Wilkins in Pittsburgh July 29 as a private with Co. G, 8th Pennsylvania Reserves (37th Pennsylvania Infantry), then promoted to corporal on a date as yet unknown and to sergeant January 1, 1862. On November 26, 1862, he transferred to Co. K, 178th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia") and promoted to 1st lieutenant effective December 13, 1862. Co. K was a Lancaster County-based conscripted unit, so he was a stranger to his men. On February 12, 1863, he again transferred, this time to Co. H, 171st Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), promoted to captain, and honorably discharged with his company August 8, 1863.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of forty in Pittsburgh September 13, 1864, mustered into federal service that day as 1st lieutenant of Battery K, 6th Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery (212th Pennsylvania), and honorably discharged with his battery June 13, 1865, at Fort Ethan Allen in Alexandria (now Arlington) County, Virginia.

On September 4, 1890, he applied for a disability pension and received it. Cause of his death is listed as "disability incident to old age" with "sciatica" a contributing factor. Oddly, no obituary was found in any online newspaper archive. On April 11, 1906, Julia applied for a widow's pension and received it.
