Mrs. Florence A. Sterling, widow of a pioneer Ellensburg banker and a resident of this community for more than 60 years, died at the Ellensburg General Hospital Friday, August 18, after an illness of three weeks.

Born in Buffalo, NY, she came west at the age of five years with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Farnham. The family resided near Portland for many years before moving to Tacoma, where Mrs. Sterling attended high school and became valedictorian of her graduating class.

Following several years of teaching school, she was married to James Chalmer Sterling in 1900. Mr. Sterling was well known as an Ellensburg banker, having served in executive capacities at the Washington National Bank, the Farmers Bank and the Ellensburg Branch of the National Bank of Commerce. He preceded her in death in 1939.

Mrs. Sterling was a member of the First Presbyterian Church here and had been active in church and club circles for many years. She was a former member of Friday Club.

She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Frank Taylor, Jr., and two sons, Raymond and Gaylord, all of Ellensburg; five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Three children preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning, August 22, at 11 o'clock in the Evenson Chapel with the Rev. Wiliam Van Ness officiating. Interment will be in the family plot at Riverview Cemetery in Portland on Wednesday, August 23 at 10 a.m. The Rev. William Thompson, formerly of Ellensburg and now pastor of a Presbyterian Church in Walla Walla will conduct graveside services.

Honorary pallbearers will be Leonard F. Burrage, Chester Robinson, J. A. Whitfield, Frank Crimp, Spencer Short, T. Eugene Farrell, Clayton Lowe, William Brown, J. Clifford Kaynor and Henry J. Whitney.
