Gaylord L. Sterling, Sr., 83, died Monday at his home on Bainbridge Island. He was born in Ellensburg, January 27, 1906, the son of James and Florence Sterling.

He attended local schools and was graduated from the University of Washington and went to work in Seattle in the offices of the Northern Pacific Railroad.

He returned to Ellensburg in 1933 an office manager for the Kittitas Reclamation District. He served as its manager and secretary until retirement in 1970.

He and his wife Gladys moved to Vashon Island after his retirement and then moved to Bainbridge Island in 1987. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in November.

He served as president of the Washington State Reclamation Association, was president of the Association of Irrigation Districts, and a member of the Water Policy Committee for the National Reclamation Association.

In addition to his wife, at their home, he is survived by a daughter, Patricia Moran, Bainbridge Island; two sons. John C. of Renton and Gaylord, Jr. of Portland; nine grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and a sister, Florence (Mrs. Frank) Taylor, Ellensburg.

A family memorial services is planned on Bainbridge Island, a family spokesperson said.
