The obverse side of Jane Grey Swisshelm's gravestone at Allegheny Cemetery, Sec. 10, Lot 485.

What's noteworthy here is just beneath the birth date and dead date, come the striking words:

"Speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward."

Originally from Exodus 14:15(KJV), Jane Swisshelm used as a motto when she published the St.Cloud Democrat in Minnesota around the Civil War.

The reverse side of Jane Grey Swisshelm's grave, which features the beloved Swisshelm homestead, Swissvale----originally built in 1798 by John Swisshelm, then in the hands of James Swisshelm when Jane married him, and then possessed by Jane after winning a divorce lawsuit in 1868 against James until her death on Jul 22, 1884.

The original Swisshelm homestead was ruined by fire on Oct 10, 1902, and the site today is marked by a Pennsylvania Historical Landmarks and Museum Commission plaque, near Braddock Avenue and I-376, and could be reached by 61B bus.

Jane Grey Swisshelm was an antislvery advocate, newspaper editor, lecturer, crusader, feminist, and Civil War nurse. Between 1858 and 1865, she wrote a series of articles and letters on women's rights.
