Lena Pearl Sears, always referred to as Libby, was the seventh of ten children born to Thomas Marion Sears and Ida Jane Speak. Her younger years were spent in Putnam County where she attended the Berry School. On 30 Jan 1919 she married Thorvald "Charles" Johnsen, a naturalized immigrant living in Illinois who was born in Denmark around 1892. This marriage produced one child; Betty Louise Johnsen born 31 Dec 1920 in Chicago, Illinois. Shortly after, Charles abandoned his family. Lena and Betty lived with her sister Nellie Taylor for many years and her husband Alexander became a second father to Betty, even giving her away at her wedding.

Lena was interred in a family plot in Chapel Cemetery in Putnam County, MO.
