John Woof's parents and siblings emigrated to South Africa in 1859, he followed shortly after. With his brother James he prospected for gold in New Zealand and Australia, then for diamonds in Kimberley, South Africa. He went to Lydenburg, caught a fever and died 12 miles from Pretoria. He is buried in Heroes Acre next to Presidents of the Transvaal Republic. His brother James and a sister erected this tombstone.

to the Memory of

who departed this life April 8th 1874
Aged 37 years.
My God, my Father, while I stray,
Far from my home on life's rough way,
O teach me from my heart to say,
"Thy will be done".

This stone was erected by his beloved brother and sister in token of their deep and faithful love for the departed.
