The oldest daughter of Manuel Souza and Mariana Carvalho, Mary come with her parents and sister Almasinda to the United States in 1901. They left from the island of St. Michael in the Azores, but it is not known if this was their home. Mary was born with a club foot, which delayed the families entrance through US Customs for a short time. Mary married John Mello. John was gassed during WWI, which probably shortened his life. He died in 1933.
