Mrs. Howell graduated high school at Greenbriar High School and was an avid basketball player. She graduated from the Columbia Hospital School of Nursing. She spent two years as a Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps during WWII. Mrs. Howell traveled extensively during her tenure in the Army aboard army hospital ships returning men from overseas. She retired from the Fort Jackson Army Hospital after 25 years of service.
During her retirement, she was active in many Veterans’ Organizations. She was State Commander of South Carolina Amvets of which she was a life member. She was also a life member of VFW Post #641 and a member of Eastern Star #59.
