ALEXANDER HAY JR. was my great uncle. He was born in Scotland in 1888 and was not a citizen of the US at the time he was drafted. He had to choose to join in the British Army or the US Army. He chose the latter.

He enlisted 04 Apr 1918, reporting to Camp Dix, NJ. He was assigned to 152 Dep Brig to 22 Apr 1918, Co. E 309 Inf. to 01 May 1918, & Hq Co.309 Inf. 78th Div. until his discharge. He sustained injuries from mustard gas at St. Mihiel, France and shrapnel in his legs at the Meuse-Argonne defensive. He was sent home Feb 1919. The VFW Post # 62 made him the first overseas man to become a member in Jersey City, NJ.

He died from the effects of his injuries at age 33 on Tue. 21 Sep 1920 at 9:20 PM at home surrounded by family, friends, and his military comrades. He was given a Military Hero's burial by the VFW, Wheeler Post.
