John was the son of Joseph Deveraux (1760-1845) and Elizabeth Hayward (1764-1842).

He married Esther Cockshut in England.

Their children may have been: Paul Cockshut Deveraux (1821-after 1900), Emanuel (1823-?), Eliza (1826-?), Emma (1828-?), Ann (1828-after 1851), Joseph Deveraux (1829-1893), John (1832-1833), Harriet Deveraux Richins (1833-1896), Ester Deveraux Baldwin (1838-after 1881).

John left Liverpool on March 23, 1856 on the Mormon charter "Enoch Train". His wife Esther died during the voyage across the Atlantic Ocean.

John also married Anne Perkins July 10, 1857 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
