A Methodist Minister until his retirement in 1891.
On a Sunday in September of 1876 in Lake Crystal, Minnesota Rev. Jones was on the way to his congregation when he was stopped by two rough looking, armed men on horse back. They requested a sermon and he gave them a private sermon. The men tried to pay him for his services and he refused payment. The men turned out to be Frank & Jessie James returning from their unsuccessful bank robbery in Northfield, Minnesota.
Due to the large quantity of "William Jones's" in the Welsh community, he was know as "Machno" Jones most of his life.
Shortly before his death he baptized his grandson W. Vernon Jones (the son of Joseph P. Jones).
He died while in the care of his youngest son, Joseph P. Jones from complications of diabetes.
