Ezekiel first served with the Virginia 23rd Cavalry, Company "D" during the Civil War. He later transfered as a Sergeant with the Virginia 62nd Mounted Infantry 2nd Company "M".
He was captured during the Battle of Gettysburg and sent to Fort Delaware as a Prisoner.
Ezekiel was the nephew Delaware U. S. Senator Willard Saulsbury Sr. who was a sitting U. S. Senator during the entire Civil War and nephew of Delaware Governor Gove Saulsbury who was a Delaware Governor during the last month of the Civil War.
