Thank you to correspondent Larry McCombs, who cited Cornelius Penner's autobiography as a source for Penner's birth on October 21, 1870 "in the Nepluew area in the village of Hamburg No.3, which was located on the so-called Zolony River." Mr. McCombs also provided the attached photo and permission to use it here. According to the 1901 Census of Stanley, Lisgar, Manitoba, Cornelius Penner was a German Mennonite farmer born Oct. 21, 1878 in Russia, who immigrated, as did his wife Anna, in 1878. I note, however, that the brother living with them, Henry Penner, born Sept. 13, 1876, is said to have immigrated in 1898. Further, Cornelius and Anna's son John is said to have been born April 28, 1894 in Russia. Therefore, it is probable that the year 1878 for Cornelius's immigration is in error, and might more correctly be 1898. Also listed is the Penners's daughter Annie, aged 1, born in Manitoba.
