Cemantha S Boyd was born Aug 23, 1815 in Shelburne, Franklin County, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Thomas Boyd and Susannah Smith, and was the youngest of 6 other siblings. The S May have stood for Susannah. 3 days later,….. her mother Susannah (Smith) Boyd died on Aug 26. Her Grandfather John Boyd Jr died in Shelburne on October 11, 1815, and shortly afterwards, her grandmother Mary (Warren) Boyd moved into their household. Within a year she had a new stepmother, Polly (Gilbert), who her father Thomas Boyd, married in 1816. There were at least 2 infant siblings that died very early from this union. On Aug 2, 1822, Polly died. And within a year, her father Thomas remarried again, to a Miriam Allis in Shelburne in 1823. Cemantha's grandmother Mary (Warren) Boyd died in 1825, leaving only their own family in Shelburne with Aunts and Uncles all moved away, and her only living grandparent, her maternal grandmother Bulah (Parsons) Smith in Ohio by 1820. In May of 1828 in Shelburne, the first sibling was to be married, Caroline Boyd to Safford Rawson of Schroon Lake, Essex County, NY. It was later in this year when Thomas made the decision to move to the town of York in Livingston County, NY. His decision may have been influenced by his 2nd cousins Apollos Long, and Holloway Long, and also their Uncle Peter Holloway who was a neighbor to Thomas Boyd and his father John Boyd Jr in Shelburne, and also the witness on John Boyd's will. They had all moved to York in Livingston County, NY, before 1820. So Thomas with wife Miriam and daughters Susan, Louisa, Philena, and Cemantha, and also son Thomas Parsons Boyd traveled the distance to Livingston County, NY. Mary went to live with her sister Caroline in Schroon Lake for a short while. Miriam's brother Col Joel Ensign Allis traveled with them also, from Shelburne to Livingston County, NY. He lived nearby at first until moving closer to LeRoy, Genesee County, NY. Thomas settled on a property in South Griegsville that would later become a long passageway to their farmhouse with other houses built alongside it, and it would eventually be named 'Boyd Lane', and still exists today. Philena Boyd was the first to get married in their new residence location to a James Dow of Covington, NY in 1832. Next was Thomas Parsons Boyd to wed Anna Steele of East Bloomfield. Louisa Boyd was next in early 1834 to marry Franklin Kendall of Covington. Then on September 3rd of 1834 a double wedding was held for Susan Boyd marrying John H Stanley of Mt Morris and Mary Bulah Boyd marrying Ami Smith.
Cemantha would wait until 1836 to marry Henry Hogan Barnes of Greigsville. Henry was the adopted son of Gideon and Permelia Barnes. Gideon ran a tavern that was not far from Boyd Lane. In 1837 came Cemantha's first son, Darwin H Barnes. Then came Lucien J Barnes in 1839. Then in 1845 Cassius M Barnes was born. And in 1847 Julius A Barnes was born. In 1848, Henry and Cemantha moved with their family westward to Albion, Calhoun County, Michigan, possibly for better opportunities and better farming soil? Cemantha's sister Mary (Boyd) Smith had moved west since her marriage in 1834, to Ohio, then Michigan until 1849, and then moved to Wisconsin. Mary's son Gustavus A Smith is listed as born in NY by all censuses in 1847. They may have come back to visit for a period before moving further westward. Cemantha had her only daughter at age 40, in 1855, Mary Louise Barnes in Albion, Calhoun County, Michigan. Henry is listed as a dentist in a couple censuses and a farmer in his last census of 1870. Cemantha is listed as a housekeeper. Three sons served in the Union forces during the civil war, Darwin, Lucien, and Cassius. With Cassius becoming the most prominent later on by being appointed Governor of the Oklahoma territory in 1897 by President McKinley. Julius was listed as a real estate agent and Mary Louise Barnes is listed as a music teacher in the 1880 and 1900 census.
