Obituary for Peter Abelar
Peter Abelar, 84, a native of Tracy, passed away on Sunday, August 4th at his home surrounded by his family.
A graduate of Tracy High School, Mr. Abelar served in the armed forces during the Korean War as a rifleman with the 8th Cavalry Regiment. He also served as a member of General Mark W. Clark's honor guard on Hokkaido in Japan.
After his service to his country, Mr. Abelar worked for Shell Oil Company for 14 years and then for the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory for 25 years, retiring in 1990.
As a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church, he was active as a youth basketball coach. He enjoyed woodworking, masonry, fishing, golfing, oil painting, writing poetry and spending time with his grandchildren teaching them to do the things he loved to do.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Elizabeth (Betty) Abelar, 4 children, Martin Abelar of San Diego, Valerie (Bob) Gentry of Tracy, Gregory (Ellen) Abelar of Aptos, Richard (Karen) Abelar of Tracy, 4 sisters, 2 brothers, 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Juan and Petra Abelar.
A special thank you to his friend and caregiver, Belle Ladines, his many doctors and their staffs and Community Hospice for their support.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, August 9th at 10:30 at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, 163 W. Eaton Ave. Burial will be in Tracy Cemetery, 501 W. Schulte Rd.
