James had an adventurous youth, prospecting for gold in Australia and New Zealand before success at the Diamond Diggings in Kimberley, South Africa. He was a partner in J. Woof and Munnik Tobacco of Cape Town, founded in 1874 as the Economic Tobacco Company with his brother in law Samuel Phillips. The company Woof & Co Tobacco & Snuff Works remained in the Woof family hands for many years. James was a founder of St. Michael and all Angels Church in Observatory, Cape Town. A pulpit carved from stinkwood was erected in his memory, by his children.
