He was born on July 26, 1931 in Rhine Center in Sheboygan County, a son of the late Arthur and Alice Dexheimer Sander.
He attended Plymouth area grade schools and graduated from Plymouth High School in 1951.
He served in the US Army from 1952-1954 during the Korean War.
On November 19, 1955, he married Leona Stemper at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Plymouth. The couple resided in Plymouth since their marriage.
He worked at Cleveland Container in Plymouth for many years and also at A & P Cheese Company for 15 years and at Great Lakes Cheese Company for 10 years, retiring in 1993.
He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Plymouth and also a member of the Ushers Society in the church.
Gene also was a member of the Eagles Club in Plymouth and he also bowled in many Plymouth Bowling Leagues and Traveling Leagues. He enjoyed bird watching and dining out and spending time up north.
Survivors include his wife, Leona of Plymouth; two sons; four grandchildren; one brother Eldor Sander of Plymouth; two sisters, Marilyn Rooker of Waldo, Helen (Philip) Maurer of Kiel; two step-brothers Clifford (Nancy) Meyer of Plymouth, Gene Meyer; one step-sister Ilene Burkhart of Brillion.
Gene was preceded in death by one son, Gary Sander, one sister-in-law Therese Sander and one brother-in-law Ray Rooker.
A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, Dec. 2nd at 12:00 Noon at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Plymouth. Father Dennis Van Beek, Pastor of the church will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Friends may call Saturday at Church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services.
