This man was a casualty of war, he was killed as a direct or indirect result of a German U-boat attack on the Transatlantic Ocean Liner "Tuscania" on the evening of Feb. 5, 1918.
U.S. Army burial records reflect that this man was a "Half-cast Negro member of ships crew." This means that he was a man born of mixed race, one parent white, one parent of color.
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission of the U.K. state that the only document they have of this "unknown" buried on Islay only states that he is a "British Negro."
In any case, he is one of the men listed as MIA or lost at sea from this disaster. Perhaps if his burial record had documented this mans approximate age, height, and possibly weight it might have narrowed down the possibilities of this mans identity.
