He entered as a student at Lincoln's Inn in 1842, in 1843 obtained a B.A. degree at the University of London, thereafter M.A.
Gold medallist in mathematics and natural philosophy in 1844. In 1846,fellow of University College, and in 1847 he was called to the Bar at Lincoln's Inn.
