At her home in Tuscola, Ill, Saturday, January 23, 1886, Mother Abigail Maris, in the eightieth year of her age, died.
Abigail Hunt, daughter of Zimri & Mary Hunt, was one of a family of ten children; three sons and seven daughters. She was born in Guilford county, North Carolina, Oct 6. 1805, and at her death her age was seventy-nine years, three months and seventeen days. At the age of twelve she removed with her parents to Sullivan county, Ind, whee she resided a number of years, employing her time, when at the proper age, in teaching school.
She then, in company with her grand-parents, removed to Parke county, locating near Rockville; was married to William Maris in 1826 by Esq. Harger, on the farm whee Wm. Linebarger now lives. She then took up her abode in Annapolis, and from thence to West Union, where her husband died Oct 3, 1856. In 1858 she removed to Tuscola, Ill., where she remained until her death. She was the mother of eight children, three sons and five daughters, of whom only the sons survive her.
Mother Maris experienced religion at an early age, and through all the years of her long life she never failed to bear witness by her words and by her daily walk, of the power of Jesus to save; and in her last hours, while surrounded by her children and friends, and while the Death Angel was doing Its mighty work, she had the victory, and said; "It is the happiest moment of my life." All glory to God for the power of Jesus to save.
Funeral services were held at the M.E church in Tuscola at 10 o'clock am on the following Monday, conducted by Rev Wyatt. The remains were taken to Bloomingdale, where short service was held by Rev Siler at Friends' church; she was then laid in the cemetery close by.
The three sons of the deceased return thanks to the people at both places for their kindness and sympathy.
