Son of James Valentine Calver, Sr. (died before 1869) and Susan M. Larock Calver (b. Jan 1815 in England, d. 17 Jun 1898 in Washington DC). They and their eight children (Ellen, Henry, James Jr., Thomas, William, twins Mariah and Jane, who was called "Jenny", and Amelia) emigrated from England in 1849, possibly for religious reasons, and settled in Columbia County, NY. On September 17, 1850, Thomas and four of his siblings were placed with the Shakers at New Lebanon "to be educated and taught a suitable occupation". The rest of the family remained nearby, "within an hour's walk".

In 1854, however, Thomas' sister Mariah left the Shakers, changing her name to Mary, and Thomas followed a year later. Mary married George B. Whiting in 1887. James Jr. stayed until October 7, 1871, when he left to enter dental school at age 41. Subsequently, he became a prominent dentist in Baltimore and Washington, DC, earning extra income through a Shaker remedy for toothache which he patented. He eventually married at 48, and died by suicide in Orlando, FL on 2 Apr 1901. William left in 1872, preceded by Harry. Harry was later married to Frances A. Waters (b. May 1851, d. 10 Mar 1914, buried Worcester, MA); they had one son, Arthur.

Their sister Jane also left the Shakers and married Frank Oakes. Another sister, Ellen, drowned under mysterious circumstances, probably suicide, in the Shaker community at age 22 in 1868. Amelia alone remained with the Shakers for life and became an influential elder and leader.

Thomas married, first, Ada B. ___ [Blackwell?]. She was born in North Carolina in 1848, and died 4 Mar 1885 in Washington, DC.
