Daughter of James and Susan Calver. She came to the U.S. with her parents and seven brothers and sisters in 1849, and was given to the care of the Shaker community when she was three in September, 1850, along with her siblings. She drowned under mysterious circumstances in a pond at New Lebanon, and her death was ruled to be suicide.

All her siblings eventually left the Shakers except for her sister Amelia, who became a teacher, writer, and highly respected Shaker authority.
