AARON JR. (4-1) b. probably Germany, probably by 1750. His daughter Rachell in 1880 said she was born to Pa. parents, however there is no sign of this clan in Pa. until 1772, and in 1880 a son of Aaron Jr's likely younger brother Solomon said the latter was of German birth.

ca 1770 - md. Mary ___ (b. Pa?)

1773 - settled land on Buffalo Creek, the year after his father (settlement dates recorded when their properties were surveyed several years later, perhaps they actually both took up land the same year.)

1777 - he and his father took the Oath of Allegiance, Sept 24, 1777 in Ohio Co. (W) Va. The father's land abutted today's state line, is today in Pa. but then claimed by Va.

1785 - he had gone down the Ohio River, was a squatter on the Western side three miles below Steubenville. Report of the houses situated between Yellow Creek (just South of present East Liverpool) and the mouth of the Muskingum (today's Marietta) on the Ohio destroyed by a detachment under the command of Capt. John Dougherty: Aaron Delong - along the shore below Cross Creek (3 miles below Steubenville) ("Federal Land Series" I:149 #2524, 30 Nov. 1785 D/164/161).

1786 - Land surveyed Washington Co., Pa. Sept 8. The father's land in Independence Twp. was surveyed July 1786. I do not know in which township Aaron Jr's land lay.

1790 - not in the census of Pa. so probably permanently in Ohio by this date.

1794 - he was of the Olive Green Garrison, now Olivegreen, Noble Co., Ohio which is far from the Ohio and Muskingum Rivers and must have been unrelieved wilderness at the time. A description is found in "George Ewing, Gentleman; a Soldier of Valley Forge" (privately printed 1928) p. 88. Thomas Ewing wrote "I have no rememberance of our removal to Olive Green Garrison; but there I first remember to have known persons not member of the family. The population of the garrison was made up of incongrous materials agreeing in very little except poverty, courage and energy. I remember some of them distinctly. Aaron DeLong a Pennsylvania Dutchman who had a large and very rough family, quite the butt of the more knowing ones".

The Olive Green settlement, Waterford Twp., then Wash. Co., was begun in the Spring of 1794. On Mar 24, Aaron Delong husbandman of Waterford bought a Donation Lot of 100 acres there from Rufus Putnam. He is listed as a landholder in Williams' "Hist. of Wash. Co. O" Abel Sherman built a blockhouse on Delong's lot, and other families built around it, and the whole collection of houses was picketed in, thus forming a garrison with about thirty inhabitants.

That fall, Aaron returned to Pa. to bring his father to Ohio. Or was it early in the year? His father's land was sold that February. See his father's sheet for Aaron Jr's description of the potential value of having done so. That account from the "Ohio Archael. & Hist. Soc." concludes "Being asked for the news, (Aaron Jr.) said 'The People in Pennsylvania thought there would be a general resurrection'. This was a subject of amusement on some of the last days of the Olive Green Settlement."

The Williams' "Hist. of Wash. Co. O." says a son and two daughters accompanied Aaron Jr. to Pa. Catherine was prob. already married, so the migration presumably included Henry b. 1780-90 and Hannah and Polly who are found in Wash. Co. marriage records.

1799 - a plaintiff, Washington Co. court records.

1800 - the Ohio census is not extant.

1803 - plaintiff, Washington Co. court.

1810 - He was not head of a household nor do they appear in Henry's home.

CHILDREN: Only Henry is verified as a child, however, the Williams "Hist. of Wash. Co. O." indicates a large family., I suggest this includes Hannah, Rebecca, Polly and Rachel, all of whom married in Wash. Co. OH, and were not likely connected with the family of Jonathan Delong (3-6). I also suggest Catherine was a daughter, she was known as Rachel's sister. Catherine has settled a bit to the north as early as 1791.

In 1977, Irma Serviss located a pre-1914 Carpenter family sketch by Catherine's grandson William A. Carpenter, which indicated five of Catherine's sisters. It includes Rachel McKee, Mrs. Sherman (who would be Rebecca), Ella-? Sprague (who would be Hannah), plus a Mrs. Dye and Mrs. Hurd. Unfortunately Henry and Polly are not mentioned, though perhaps Dye or Hurd was a second marriage for Polly. (I should point out that in the Hurd case, Serviss' letter was vague - I am unsure whether she was named by Carpenter or otherwise noted by Serviss).

(4-1-1) CATHERINE b. 1771 (family record) perhaps in Germany, perhaps Pa. Finding an 1880 census record for one of her children would help solve the matter. She md. 1791, traditionally at McKee's Rocks near Pittsburgh Edward Carpenter b. 1761.

4-1-2 HANNAH b. say ca 1775, md. Washington Co., OH, May 15, 1795 Samuel Sprague, both of Waterford.

4-1-3 POLLY b. say ca 1785, md Washington Co., Ohio, Jan 1, 1806 Charles Harwood of Waterford.

4-1-4 HENRY b. 1780-90, md. Sally Heit/Hoyt.

4-1-5 REBECCA b. Apr 6, 1794, md. Washington Co., OH, July 3 (family) or 30 (marr. rec. transcript), 1810 William Sherman (The marriage transcript has Shoeman perhaps a misreading as their bible is clearly Sherman). He was b. May 16, 1781 (a chart from desc. says b. Ohio which is very unlikely or Mass-? which is reasonable). He died May 23, 1848 in IL, she d. Aug 24, 1878, Putnam Co., IL. They lived Morgan Co., OH 1824 and 1836. Note her brother Henry also went to Putnam Co., IL. Delong family names among their children were Aaron, Mary (Ann), Rachel, Hannah and Rebecca.

4-1-6 RACHEL b. Ohio, Apr 6, 1798, d. July 30, 1884, md. Washington Co., OH, Aug 15, 1816, John McKee, he of Guernsey Co., OH, she of Washington Co., OH. John was b. Jan 2, 1788, d. Noble Tp., Noble Co., OH, Mar 7, 1873 age 85, son of David who came to Washington Co. from Lycoming Co., PA. John and Rachel were in Olive Tp., Morgan Co., OH, 1850, age 63, b. PA and 55, b. OH. They were in Noble Tp., Noble Co., OH, 1860, 72 and 63. Again 1870, 82 and 72. She was in Noble Co., OH home of daughter Margaret in 1880, age 81, b. Ohio of PA parents (her father was likely born in Germany).

4-1-7 (Dau.) md. ___ Dye. There are nine Dyes indexed in Wash. Co., 1820.

4-1-8 (Dau.) md. ___ Hurd. There were no Hurds in Sash. or Guernsey Co. 1820. There was a Silas Hurd in Brookfield, Morgan Co. in 1826.

Editor's note: although I do not like creating unknown burial memorials, I feel the above info is too valuable to not share with others researching this family. As a reward to anyone who might uncover the actual burial site of the above Aaron, I will transfer this memorial to them.
