When she was 12 Arline's father was struck with a form of intestinal cancer. Upon learning from his sister in Los Angeles of a treatment center located there, he made the trip to visit with their specialists. Unfortunately, his cancer was incurable. Notified of his impending death, the family attempted to reach him in time but her father succumbed to the disease before they arrived.
Despite their tragedy, California left an impression. After returning to Iowa, Arline met and married Delmar Charles Thomas, another Marshall County native on 30 Oct 1937. After her brother Jack graduated high school, Arline and her husband along with her mother and brother all relocated out to California where they remained the rest of their lives.
