Former Apostolic Nuncio in Peru and Archbishop of the Titular See of Apamea in Syria, Monsignor Luigi Arrigoni was born in Morimondo, Province of Milan, Lombardy, Italy, originally graduated in law but left the legal profession at age 28 to pursue his theological studies.

Ordained to the priesthood on January 18, 1922, after a brief stint as a parish priest, he was addressed to the diplomatic service of the Holy See, being assigned in Vienna, as secretary to the Apostolic Nuncio, and successively in Bucharest and Brussels.

Leaving Belgium following the Nazi occupation in 1940, he moved to the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Rome. At 56 years of age, Pope Pius XII appointed him Apostolic Nuncio in Peru, receiving his episcopal consecration with the Titular See of Apamea in Syria from Cardinal Clemente Micara assisted by Archbishops Angelo Rotta and Antonino Arata.

His tenure however proved to be a short one. Afflicted by a serious illness, he died in Lima on July 5, 1948, aged 58, and was laid to rest in the metropolitan cathedral of the city. The way through which he faced his illness and death itself, caught the attention of many, such that the prelates of Peru initiated an inquest in regards of his life with numerous people testifying they received graces through his intercession. Thousands of Peruvians visited his body while lying in state, touching rosaries and holy objects to keep as relics.

Originally buried in the crypt of the cathedral of Lima, in 1991, following the initiative of Cardinal Augusto Vargas Alzamora SJ., his remains were transferred to a definitive vault up to the cathedral itself in the chapel of Santa Rosa.
