Polly, as she is called in Thomas Boyden and His Descendants (1901), was the eldest of nine children born to Joseph and Priscilla (née Luce) Boyden of Conway, a town located in the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains in western Massachusetts. She married Joel D. Redfield of Conway when she was 18, and they had eight children born between 1806 and 1821: Clarissa, Dennis, Mary Ann, Dickinson, Christina, Joseph Boyden, Martha W., and Priscilla B.

The family moved to western New York State in or about 1822, settling in Phelps, where Polly was widowed at age 38 in 1825. Ten years later—on Oct. 16, 1835—she married George Cobb, a widowed farmer of Phelps. Following his death in 1851, she shared a home with her daughter Martha and family.

Polly's headstone record has been preserved due to the thoughtfulness and foresight of earlier transcribers:

MARY, wife of Joel D. Redfield; March 28, 1863; 75 y, 6 m, 8 d
