Stephen Smallets
Norfolk - Stephen Smallets age 64 of Norfolk, passed away suddenly on September 1, 2013. Steve was born in Shamokin, PA, the coal mining region of central Pennsylvania on October 15, 1948 to Beatrice Hetzendorf Smallets and Stephen Smallets. He served his country and completed a tour of duty in the Army in Vietnam from 1970-1971. He received his M.S. in Biology from the University of Toledo in 1979 and was Certified by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene in 1983. His 34 year career with the Navy Industrial Hygiene community began in 1979 at the Naval Regional Medical Center, Portsmouth. He then joined the Naval Inspector General , NAVOSH Oversight Inspection Unit, as part of a team performing audits of navy field activities worldwide to determine effectiveness of occupational safety and health programs. From 1986 to 2009 he was the Head of the Industrial Hygiene Department of the Health, Safety and Environmental Services Directorate, Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, with responsibilities of providing comprehensive industrial hygiene services to approximately 120,000 Navy and Marine Corps civilian and military personnel, both ashore and afloat. He developed an Industrial Hygiene Information Management System (IHIMS), used for analyzing data in many locations throughout the navy. His last position was as Regional Industrial Hygiene Program Manager for Navy Medicine East. He also served as an adjunct professor in the Environmental Health Program in the College of Health Sciences at Old Dominion University. Steve routinely presented lectures, taught courses, published papers and participated in professional organizations. He was a member of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) since 1983, a member of the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) since 1980 and the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) since 1983. He received numerous awards throughout his tenure and his professional colleagues remember him as a cornerstone in the Industrial Hygiene Community and as an expert throughout Navy Medicine.
Steve enjoyed his Buffalo Bills but was mostly interested in watching sports that involved his daughter, Sarah. He was the consummate "soccer dad and unofficial team statistician." He valued family, friendship and the camaraderie derived on the sporting sidelines.
He was preceded in death by his father Stephen Smallets Sr. in 1989. He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Karen and his beloved daughter Sarah. In addition, survivors include his mother Beatrice H. Smallets of Clarence Center N.Y.; brothers Philip (Michelle) of Marrengo, Ohio; Richard of Toledo, Ohio and sister Beatrice of Clarence Center, N.Y.; Aunts, Augustina Hetzendorf of Paxinos, PA, Mary DePaolo of Danfield, PA, Clara Smallets of Laurel, MD, six nieces and nephews and his special friend Max the cat.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 12 Noon at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Norfolk. The family will receive friends in the Norfolk Chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts. this evening from 5 to 7 p.m.
