He was the son of John M. Howe and Frances Jane Davis Howe. He married Aramantha Melvina Quinn on August 19, 1858, in York County, South Carolina. On July 1, 1862, John enlisted in the Confederate forces, 18th Regiment, Co. G, Wallace Infantry, Col. Martin, at Columbia South Carolina, as a First Sergeant. John appeared on a register of claims of deceased officers & soldiers for South Carolina, 18th SC Regiment, Co. H, Capt. Beamguard. His claim is presented by John M. Howe, his father, filed November 28, 1862, he died at Martins Lane Orange Court House VA, one day after the battle at Rappahannock Station VA. His father John M. was paid a sum of $36 for back pay & $25 for clothing. His claim states his complexion was dark, 6' tall, Black eyes, Dark Hair, was a farmer and the he was a 1st sergeant. Cause of death was a lung hemmorage. His tombstone states that he died near Orange Courthouse, VA. 8-24-1862, at the age of 25 years 7 month & 26 days.
