Melissa Jane Gibson was the fifth child of Amos and Elizabeth (Hays) Gibson. She was first married to a man, most likely in the spring of 1870 at Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and later that fall, he abandoned her. This man was the biological father of Mabel, Melissa's first child, and at this time, his identity is unknown.

Being pregnant with Mabel, Melissa moved to Nebraska to live with James M. and Laura M. (Knickerbocker) Gibson, and most likely gave birth at their homestead in Saline County. Some time after giving birth, Melissa moved a short distance away to Beatrice, Nebraska to work, while James and Laura Gibson took care of Mabel. Eli Franklin Ballard married Melissa Jan. 7, 1874 in Seward Co., Nebraska, and apparently "adopted" Mabel. Subsequently, "Frank" and "Lizzie" had three children: Mattie, John A., and David.

At the time of Melissa's death, "Frank" and "Lizzie" were living in Hall Co., near Silas and Maria (Thomas) Gibson.
