Birth year about 1794 (died age 50)

I assembled all the pieces of the marble ledger that I could see – I found all but one small piece, but unfortunately it’s the one that fits right in the middle near the top, so part of the name, the place of birth, and the month and day of death are missing- however, there is enough to tell who he is. I’m only moderately confident that the age says “50” – the 1840 census puts his age at 40-49. The last part of the line that begins “a native of. . .” looks like it could be “mont,” so maybe he was a native of Vermont? (Of course, it could be any of a number of other things instead.)

Perhaps: Augustus Hayward married April 7, 1827 in Milbury, Worcester County, MA, to Mary G. Bixby. (She is apparently a widow on the 1850-1880 censuses in Worcester Co, MA,where she died in 1881.) Also, I found the following references:

John H. Martin’s “The Making of a Modern City: Columbus, Georgia, 1827-1865,” Volume 1 (1874) reports the following: p. 80, commercial listings for 1836. . .Auction – HAYWARD & Ayer; p. 88, commercial listings for 1837. . . Warehouse & Commission – Augustus HAYWOOD; p. 121, among advertisers during 1841. . .Hampton S. Smith & Aug. HAYWARD, warehousemen [partnership]; p. 131, commercial listings for 1842. . .Warehouse and Commission – Smith & HAYWARD.

Mary Jane Galer’s “COLUMBUS, GA: Lists of People, 1828-1852, and Sexton’s Reports to 1866” (2000), shows the following: p. 2, on list of town lot owners in Columbus. . .Lot #54, A. HAYWARD (entire lot); p. 9, same for 1840-41. . . Lot #56, A. HAYWARD; p. 14, Columbus city tax list for 1832. . . Augustus HAYWOOD, $2.00; p. 19, same for 1836. . . A. Hayward, 1 poll, total $20.45 paid; p. 27, same for 1840. . . A. HAYWARD, 1 poll, total $26.68 paid; p. 33, same for 1841. . . A. HAYWOOD, 1 poll, total $26.68 paid.

On the 1840 census of Militia District #772 (called Cannon’s District in 1845; later known as Nance’s District & McCrary’s District), Augustus “HOWARD” is indexed as heading a household, but the census record reads “HAWARD.” FREE WHITE MALES: 1 aged 40-49 (= Augustus Hayward), 3 aged 20-29, 1 aged 15-19, 1 aged under 5. FREE WHITE FEMALES: 1 aged 30-39. ENSLAVED MALES: 1 aged 36-54, 1 aged 24-35, 1 aged under 10. ENSLAVED FEMALES: 1 aged 36-54, 1 aged 10-23, 1 aged under 10. Total persons: 15. Persons employed in Commerce: 5.

“Notice. / THE FIRM OF Augustus Hayward & co. / Was closed on the 11th day of January, 1819, by mutual consent. All persons indebted to that concern, or having claims against them, will please call on Augustus Hayward, who is alone authorized to settle the same. // Augustus HAYWARD. // Welcome ALLEN // Eatonton, Putnam c[oun]ty, march 27. cm"

1820 census of Capt. Jesse Bledsoe's Militia District in Putnam County, GA, shows Augustus HAYWARD, 1 male aged 16-25, residing by himself. (Possibly went back to New England & married -- can't find in GA in 1830.)

Augustus HAYWARD heads a household at Woodstock, Windham County, CT: 1 male age 20-29 (Augustus HAYWARD); 1 female age 20-29; 1 female age 10-14; 1 female under age 5.
