Adelle Crawford McMullen (Milo's daughter) was born in Cortland near Warren Ohio in the year of Dec. 1, 1872. The family moved to Petoskey, Michigan in 1876. When Milo Crawford and his wife Anna Kyle Crawford, and their children, Lenora, Karl, Kyle, George, Ervin, Logan and Adelle along with Mrs. Webber and her children, got off the train in Petoskey, the townspeople called him the Mormon.
About 1877, Milo moved his family to a piece of sandy soil land in Tuscanora Township of Cheboygan County, Michigan, located on a hill between Pickerel Lake and Burt Lakeabout 1/4 mile North of Weldwood. THe moving was mostly by water, with their few possessions packed in barrels and floated on a raft. It is surmized that this water route was from COnway through Crooked and Pickerel Lakes to the East Shore. The raft was pulled along the bank and at one time the dog jumped on the raft and tipped it over. Grandfather's violin came unglued and had to be put back together and it was used to fiddle for many dances. He was a music and singing teacher back in Ohio.
THe farmland was actually in the wilderness. Log houses had to be built with bunks to sleep in. The first one was so small that it later became the chicken coop. The second house couldn't have been very large as the hole in the ground in 1953 didn't seem to be over 15x20 ft. Lilacs and Roses were found about the old log home site.
The family lived here until about 1887 when they moved back into Petoskey. Adelle worked part of the time at the Buckeye House on Burt Lake. On November 6, 1890 Adelle married Fred McMullen. This was just before she turned 18 on December 1. They lived in Petoskey, Indian River and Burt Lake.
In 1892 the first part of their house at 516 Wachtel Avenue in Petoskey, Michigan was built with the help of Grandfather Crawford.
