Called Jack, he was the son of Michael & Alice (née Britt) McGowan of Ringsend, Co., Dublin, Ireland. He was their 2nd son to be named John, the 1st John, the family's eldest child, died at age 5 in 1885.
Jack emigrated to America at 16 with his brother Tom to join their father who had left a few months before them.. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1917 and served until the end of World War I.
During the summer of 1920, Jack and his sister Nance were back in Ireland visiting their sister Elizabeth Mansfield. It was during this stay that Jack & Nance became Godparents to Elizabeth's son Morgan O.P. Mansfield.
In September 1920 he married Bess McGinty in New York. The McGowans had 6 children, all born and raised in Park Slope, Brooklyn.
Jack spent the next 40 years on the waters around New York & Long Island as a Captain for the Standard Oil subsidy Socony Vacuum Co. He was a life long member of the Park Slope Civic League and Chairman of it's membership committee.
