Morgan is the son of Capt. Michael & Alice (née Britt) McGowan of Ringsend, Dublin. His twin sister Martha died at just 2 weeks old.

He was named in honor of his grandmother's family, the Morgans of Skerries, Ireland, as was his nephew Morgan O.P. Mansfield, his sister Elizabeth's son. Capt. Michael's mother was Mary (née Morgan) Gowan. The Morgan surname has continued to pass down through the generations as a family forename to this day.

Morgan was hearing impaired from birth. At some point within a year or two of his mother's sudden death in 1908, he was sent to live and be educated by the Christian Brothers at their 'St. Joseph's School for Deaf and Dumb Boys' located in Cabra, Dublin. Morgan was 9 when his mother passed away.

The Christian Brothers taught him the cobbler trade.

In 1943, Morgan married Madge Connell, they lived on Baggot Street in Dublin where he had his cobbler's shop. Madge too was hearing impaired from birth. Close in age to Morgan, during the years he was at St. Joseph's, she lived at the nearby Cabra school called the 'Institution For the Deaf & Dumb at St. Mary's' run by the Dominican Nuns.

Marrying at a late age, had no children.

✞ Morgan McGowan is buried with Madge, his wife of 34 years, in the McGowan family plot at Glasnevin Cemetery. He's with his mother, twin sister Martha, brothers John, Matthias & Michael and sister Marianne.
